  • Superintendent Update #2 School Re-opening

Posted by Ginger Shea on 7/2/2020 3:00:00 PM

    OSD Families and Staff,

The Return to School Task Force met in June to plan for the reopening of schools in the fall. They examined the data from the parent and staff surveys that were sent out to the community and made recommendations to the Superintendent to help plan for school to start in August.

Please understand that as these plans are being developed, they can change based on new recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) or the California Department of Education (CDE). These recommendations and plans all are pending approval from Ventura County Public Health (VCPH) and the Ventura County Office of Education (VCOE).

Oxnard School District is in the process of developing instructional plans for full time distance learning for families who do not want to return to school in the fall. More information on this option will be coming in the next couple of weeks.

These recommendations are posted on the district website in video format at www.oxnardsd.org

    Teaching and Learning

    • In person instruction provided via a blended learning approach combining face to face and distance learning
      • In this model, students would attend school two days per week (Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday
      • This would take into consideration keeping siblings together on the same schedule

    Technology Development

    • Recommended Canvas as a learning management system (LMS)
      • Provide one digital learning platform for all students and grades
      • Single starting point for the educational experience of students, parents, teachers and staff
      • Support communication within the district
      • Teachers could share resources
      • Parents would have access to see what students are working on

    Health and Safety

    • The health and safety team to follow the guidelines recommended by the CDC
    • Hand washing and hygiene schedules at each school site
      • Hand sanitizer or hand-washing stations at every entrance and exit of the school
      • The supplies checked before the start of each day
    • Require mandatory use of face covers (cloth or masks) in accordance with federal, state and local guidelines currently in effect
    • Provide appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed
    • Visual checking for symptoms
      • All students and visitors get checked for symptoms every day before entering school
      • Deny entry to visitors with any symptoms consistent with COVID-19
      • Send home or isolate until they can be sent home any staff and students with any symptoms or who have had close contact with a person with COVID-19
    • Please understand that health checks and verification must start at home
      • Educate students, parents and staff about COVID-19

     Child Nutrition Services

    • When students are in attendance at school, breakfast and “grab and go” lunch will be provided
    • On days of distance learning, pre-ordered box meals would be available for pick-up which will include: 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 5 dinners
    • Distribution hours will be determined based on a parent survey

    • Classroom spaces are being assessed and reorganized to maintain social distancing
      • Unused spaces (library, MPR,…) will be used to create spaces for counseling, special education services and other needs
    • Clean and disinfect classrooms with a specialized machine purchased that disinfects classrooms in 15 minutes
    • Use highly rated air filters and circulate air to bring in as much outside air as possible
      • Schools with the option to open doors and windows to the outside will be encouraged to do so

    Maintaining Healthy Operations

    • Conduct daily absence and symptom verification and report weekly absenteeism of staff and students for COVID or flu-like diseases using the VCPH monitoring survey
    • Immediately inform the VCPH of absenteeism rates greater than 10% of staff and students on a single day, at any school
    • Designate a school district liaison officer to work with the VCPH in the traceability of confirmed COVID-19 cases of a student, teacher, or staff member
    • Train the school district liaison in contagion traceability from the Ventura County Office of Public Health

Consideration of a Partial or Total Closure

    • Closure of a class or multiple classes may be necessary to prevent transmission of the disease, but any decision to close completely or part of the schools will done in consultation with the Ventura County Office of Public Health
      • In most cases, full schools will not be required to close, even if there are confirmed cases among staff or students
      • The Ventura Public Health Office will work with the district liaison officer to help coordinate testing of large groups of staff or students as needed
      • A close contact is someone who has been 6 feet or less from one person for a sustained period of time (10-30 minutes)

    • Actively communicate information and procedures to employees, students and families
      • A district-wide information guide for employees and parents to learn about COVID-19
      • Oxnard School District website, school websites, push notifications (Connect Ed), brochures, use of the teacher's communication platform to transmit information to parents (i.e. ClassDojo)
      • Entry signs, banners and decals (in English and Spanish)

The district is evaluating these recommendations. Any plans to move forward will need to be approved by VCPH, VCOE, and the school board.

Please submit any questions or comments to the SUGGESTION BOX .

  • Revised Expectations for Distance Learning at OSD Schools

Posted by Dr. Ana DeDenna, Assistant Superintendent, Ed Services on 4/13/2020 9:00:00 AM

      Distance Learning

      Dear Oxnard School District Families,
We hope this message finds you well and healthy. We are already missing you! We are truly grateful that our community is coming together to support one another as we navigate these uncharted waters.
Over the last couple of weeks, you should have already been in contact with your child’s teacher and you should have received enrichment and review work for your child. We have been working with our staff in order to continue providing our students essential learning opportunities. The learning opportunities will look a little different, depending on your student’s grade level and specialized program.
Here are our expectations for distance learning, beginning April 20, 2020:
     Grade Level Learning Opportunities
 Learning Opportunities must be planned and developed by grade level or department teams.
 Learning opportunities will be aligned to Common Core Standards and California Content Standards.
 First through Eighth Grade students will be provided remote learning through iPads. First grade students will be provided IPads beginning on April 20, 2020 at your child’s school. The school will contact you with more details regarding date and time.
 Grades Preschool, Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten will be provided packets. Parents will be notified when packets will be available at your child’s schools.
In addition to the teacher created lessons, we encourage you to visit our Distance Learning webpage https://sites.google.com/oxnardsd.org/osd-distance-learning/home. On this page you will find many resources to assist in your child’s learning during this time.
We realize, these unchartered waters can create a great deal of stress and uncertainty. In order to assist you and provide you support, our schools have created some guidelines so that you can have access to your child’s teacher, principal, counselor or any other staff member. Please keep in mind April 6 through April 17 the Oxnard School District will be on Spring break. Below please find the guidelines to assist you when we return on April 20th.
 Teachers will be available to connect with students during school day using teacher-preferred platform to provide assistance. Teachers will establish daily “office hours” during which they will be available to answer questions and provide support. Your child’s teacher will provide you their office hours or you may call the school to request the hours.
 Outside of these office hours, Monday through Friday, all teachers will respond to parent/student calls, email, etc. within 24 hours.
 Teachers will make every attempt to connect with all students and establish a system of two-way communication. Whenever possible teachers will provide students feedback and support. If you have not heard from your child’s teacher, please call the school to ensure we have your correct contact information.
 Special Education case managers will reach out to all students on their caseload and connect with grade levels to support students with any modifications and/or accommodations.
 Beginning April 20th, all schools will have office hours Tuesdays from 9:00-12:00 and Thursdays from 12:00 -3:00. These office hours will be by appointment and staff will be available to provide any support you need. Please make sure to call the school in advance to schedule an appointment.
As you know, Ventura County has announced that all of our school buildings will remain closed for the remainder of the school year. However, teaching and learning remotely will continue. We will continue to reach out weekly with updates regarding your child’s education. Please continue to stay tuned and check your email or our website regularly. If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call us.

  • All 21 Schools in the Oxnard School District to Stay Closed Through the Remainder of the 2019-2020 School Year: Distance Learning and School Meals Will Continue

Posted by Dr. Karling Aguilera-Fort, Superintendent on 4/1/2020 6:15:00 PM

     Important Update

      April 1, 2020

      Dear OSD Families and Staff:

The Board of Education and our district leadership are committed to ensuring the health and safety of our entire Oxnard School District community. Based on recommendations from state and local health and education officials, we have made the decision to extend remote learning through the end of the 2019-20 school year. This does not mean the current school year is over.

Today, the Ventura County Office of Education announced that all Ventura County school districts agreed to keep their school campuses closed through the end of the school year in support of the coronavirus mitigation effort. The decision was made in consultation with Ventura County Public Health Officer, Dr. Robert Levin. This decision comes after recommendations from California Governor Gavin Newsom and California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond for schools to continue providing distance learning in lieu of in-class instruction for the remainder of the current school year.

OSD is committed to providing our students with Standard-Based Distance Learning that ensures readiness for the next grade levels. Our instructional staff will plan grade-level appropriate and rigorous lessons in order to maximize the learning of our students. We will provide more information to staff and families in the coming days.

We are among other Ventura County school districts that are already providing distance learning opportunities for students and will continue making them more robust.

Meals for children ages 1-18 in our community will continue to be available at our four school sites: Harrington, Driffill, Cesar Chavez, and Fremont.

One of the most difficult aspects of the closure is the disruption to traditional end-of-year activities including promotion ceremonies. We are exploring alternative ways to celebrate and recognize our students for their accomplishments.

In closing, please know that we will continue to share any new information with you as we have it. We are grateful for the dedicated teachers, administrators and support staff working hard to provide all of our students’ academic needs and overall wellbeing during these challenging times. For the latest updates, please visit our website at www.OxnardSD.org.
