Supporting Learning at Home
Create a Learning-Friendly Environment
- Establish a quiet, well-lit study space.
- Minimize distractions such as TV and video games during study time.
- Establish a daily schedule for homework, study time, and other educational activities.
Reading & Writing
- Read to your child or have your child read to you regularly.
- Use pictures and ask your child to tell you what they see or what is happening.
- Give your child opportunities to use English outside of school.
- Read, read, read—in ANY language!
- Write—in ANY language.
- Ask your child to read for at least 15 minutes each day and aim for an 85% reading comprehension score. This can help them advance one full grade level in a year. Imagine what 30 minutes could do!
Building Language & Communication Skills
- Encourage students to use complete sentences when answering.
- Use details in everyday language.
- Look at pictures or scenes together: ask questions and have your child describe what they see—in detail!
- Practice listening: tell your child a family story and ask them a specific question about what they just heard.
- Practice note-taking: tell a story and have your child take notes while listening.
- Show your child pictures and ask them to tell you a story using the pictures.
- Practice retelling: books, TV shows, and real-life situations are all great material.
- Give two options, have your child choose one, and ask them to explain in detail why they chose it.
- Encourage your child to participate in constructive conversations during class.
General Involvement & Well-Being
- Make sure your child works hard and tries their best every day.
- Attend parent-teacher conferences and school events.
- Support your child’s interests and encourage them to explore new topics.
- Encourage your child to strive for success and accept that everyone makes mistakes.
- Teach your child to take responsibility for their education—organizing materials, managing time.
- Offer emotional support and be there to talk about educational challenges.
- Ensure your child attends school regularly and arrives on time.
- Encourage a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep to support concentration and learning.
