Positive School Climate
Schools where students feel supported, respected, and safe
Positive School Climate places students at the center of its focus. Within the model, students are surrounded by a wide range of support structures and systems that work together to provide each student with a safe and welcoming environment. A positive school climate is necessary for each student to feel safe and ready to learn. When students are supported and nurtured through a positive school climate, they thrive and are able to focus their efforts on academic goals — performing better academically and staying healthier, socially and emotionally. The four components below relate to positive school climate in Oxnard School District.
Climate of Support for Academic Learning
Oxnard School District places a high value on students' self-efficacy. School research shows a strong correlation between self-efficacy and student success, so the District explicitly teaches social and emotional skills such as self-efficacy. The District uses a web-based application, Panorama, to assess students' social and emotional assets and to respond to identified areas of need.
Knowledge and Fairness of Rules and Norms
Oxnard School District has established practices and procedures to ensure that students consistently know and understand expectations at school. Each school site develops its own Guidelines for Success, which inform students of the school's expectations and values. Staff consistently teach and reinforce these guidelines, and use them as the reference point when correcting misbehavior. Parents are encouraged to know and reinforce their school's Guidelines for Success.

Safety
In the context of school climate, safety refers to how safe students feel — physically and emotionally — and how much they feel respected as individuals within the school community. The Oxnard School District Board of Trustees recognizes the importance of providing a safe school environment that is conducive to learning. The Superintendent or designee implements appropriate practices to minimize the risk of harm to students, including practices relative to school facilities and equipment, the outdoor environment, educational programs, and school-sponsored activities. The following Board Policies and Administrative Regulations provide guidance to staff and assurances to families of a safe learning environment.
Sense of Belonging
For students to feel a sense of belonging, they need to feel valued as individuals. Oxnard School District affirms that valuing diversity is an integral part of creating an environment where students belong. Diversity recognizes the differences between people — including religion, political orientation, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, language, socio-economic status, and family structure. Cultural diversity in the classroom means celebrating those differences and creating a culture of inclusion and acceptance among students and the greater school community.
