Warning Signs
Knowing the warning signs can help you recognize when someone may be at risk. A person may need support if they are:
- Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves
- Looking for a way to end their life, such as searching online or seeking access to lethal means
- Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
- Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
- Talking about being a burden to others
- Increasing their use of alcohol or drugs
- Acting anxious or agitated, or behaving recklessly
- Sleeping too little or too much
- Withdrawing or feeling isolated
- Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
- Displaying extreme mood swings
If you notice these signs in a student, family member, or friend, take them seriously and do not leave the person alone. Call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 for free, confidential support, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
