Behavioral Support Services
What are behavioral support services:
Behavior services are school-based interventions based on applied behavior analysis for children who are in need of behavior programs. Behavior services are similar to other DIS services that are offered to students within the Oxnard School District. Behavior services are available for students who have an IEP, do not have an IEP, and for those students who are being assessed to determine if they qualify for an IEP. Behavior services also include consultation, training, and support for both special education and general education staff.
Purpose:
The purpose of behavioral support services is twofold: 1) to collaborate with school staff and support their understanding and implementation of evidence-based practices and 2) to design and promote environments that decrease challenging behaviors that are impacting student's academic, social-emotional, and overall well-being while increasing the skills that will help students be a successful member of their school community.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) are a key component of our approach to supporting students in the Oxnard School District. The PBIS framework is designed to create and maintain positive, safe, and effective learning environments by promoting positive behavior and reducing challenging behaviors through proactive strategies. This aligns with our goal to foster a supportive environment that enhances positive identity development.

The Oxnard School District follows a tiered based intervention program to support
- Tier 1 Interventions: These are school-wide interventions designed to promote positive behavior among all students. They include setting clear expectations for behavior, teaching these expectations, and consistently reinforcing them across all settings. These interventions provide an environment that supports reinforcing positive behaviors and social interactions.
- Tier 2 Interventions: These targeted interventions are designed for students who require additional support beyond the universal strategies. Tier 2 interventions might include social skills training, small group counseling sessions, or mentorship programs. These interventions help address specific needs related to building self-esteem, developing healthy relationships, and enhancing social-emotional skills.
- Tier 3 Interventions: These are intensive, individualized interventions for students who exhibit persistent behavioral challenges. The behavior support team, and other special education support providers such as School Psychologists and Special Education teachers, uses data-driven approaches to develop personalized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) that address the unique needs of each student. These plans are tailored to support positive identity development by addressing any behavioral or emotional challenges that may be hindering student progress.
By utilizing the PBIS framework, the behavior support team at the Oxnard School District is able to provide comprehensive support that addresses the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of all students. This approach ensures that the school environment is conducive to positive identity development, allowing students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
