  • Distance Learning Resources for OSD Students

Posted by Dr. Ana DeGenna, Assistance Superinendent of Education Services on 3/19/2020 3:00:00 PM

During the school closures, our district is committed to finding ways to support the education of our students. We want you to know that we are working to identify ways to continue providing our students learning opportunities through these school closures. Yesterday we received additional information on distance learning options for all.

Our team has developed a new Distance Learning Resources Tab on our webpage to allow you to access instructional lessons and resources. This webpage contains grade level activity packets for grades PreK-8. Additionally, you will find a PowerPoint presentation that provides you specific directions on how to access materials and who to contact for assistance.

If you would prefer a paper copy of our new grade level activity packets for grades PreK-8, they can be picked up at any one of our schools. Printed copies for TK-1 will be readily available, as well as some resources that students may need to complete packets such as pencils, crayons, etc. Packets for Second through Eighth grade are downloadable but if you prefer a paper copy, please call the school in advance to have one printed for you. School offices will remain open during regular school hours. If you cannot come to school, please contact your school and we will make arrangements to get packets to you.

Thank you for your patience during these incredibly stressful and unusual times. We will continue to provide you regular updates and provide information on the Oxnard School District webpage. Please contact your school if you find there are additional resources you need or if there are ways we can support you.
Please take care of yourselves and your family.

  • OSD Schools Closed Until May 1, 2020

    School Closures

    Dear OSD Families and Staff:

The impacts of the coronavirus are touching every aspect of our lives and forcing all of us to find creative ways to adapt to this unprecedented situation. We know the disruption in normal school operations has created many issues and uncertainties – from childcare and meals to graduation plans and college preparation. In this letter, we will answer some of your most pressing questions as best we can.

    When will school reopen?

In coordination with the Ventura County Office of Education and all Ventura County school districts, the Oxnard School District will be keeping our schools closed at least through Friday, May 1. Our new target date to reopen is Monday, May 4.

As you know, things are changing daily, so there is the potential that the closures could be extended beyond May 1, 2020. Yesterday, California Governor Gavin Newsom advised parents to prepare for the possibility that schools may be closed through the summer break. While that could indeed happen, we remain hopeful that conditions will improve enough to allow us to reopen before the end of the school year.

    Will promotion ceremonies be held?

Like all of you, we want nothing more than to honor our students for their accomplishments. The thought of 8th grade promotion ceremonies being cancelled is heartbreaking, and we will do all we can to make them happen. In the event that in-person ceremonies are not possible due to public health concerns, we will explore alternative ways to recognize our students for their achievements.

Will remote learning be provided for students at home?

Yes. We are currently working on plans to provide remote learning for our students. As you can imagine, this is no small endeavor. It involves issues with technology, training and equitable access for all students, including those with special needs and those who do not have internet service or computers at home. We are working to roll out distance learning as soon as possible and will notify parents when it is ready. In the meantime, Southern California PBS TV stations are offering TV-based at-home learning opportunities for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Additional information is at www.kcet.org/at-home-learning.

Are students required to participate in remote learning?

Once our remote learning plan is in place, students are expected to participate. We understand some families may have situations that make participation difficult or impossible and we are happy to discuss those situations on a case-by-case basis.

Will state CAASPP testing take place?

The state CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) testing in math and English language arts has been canceled for the current school year and will not take place.

Will school meals continue to be provided?

Yes. Oxnard School District will continue to provide school meals, which are a vital source of nutrition for many students. A list of meal pickup locations and times are available at www.OxnardSD.org and for a list of meal pickup sites located throughout Ventura County, please visit www.vcoe.org/meals.

    Will schools provide childcare?

We are aware that school closures present serious childcare challenges for many families. However, the point of closing the schools is to protect students from exposure to COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and to slow its spread. This social distancing is for the greater good of our communities. Using schools as childcare locations would defeat the purpose of the closures, so we will not be offering childcare at our school sites at this time.

In closing, please know there are dedicated teachers, administrators and support staff working hard to provide for our students’ academic needs and overall wellbeing during these challenging times. This situation is evolving rapidly and we will continue to share new information with you as we have it. For the latest updates, please visit our website at www.OxnardSD.org.

  • Oxnard School District Announces School Closures

Posted by Dr. Karling Aguilera-Fort, Superintendent on 3/13/2020 9:00:00 AM

    March 13, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians of the Oxnard School District Community,

Like you, we are all concerned about the spread of the novel coronavirus and the uncertainty it’s creating in our daily lives. Ventura County Public Health department declared a local health emergency, which will provide additional resources for coronavirus response. As a result of this declaration and in the interest of the health of our community, Oxnard School District has decided to close all of our schools beginning Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 20. We hope to reopen on Monday, March 23, but that decision will depend on the circumstances at the time. We will update families about our plans no later than Friday, March 20.

This closure is in support of the recommendations from public health officials to encourage “social distancing” to slow the spread of the virus. It is strongly recommended that students stay home during the closure as much as possible and do not gather in public places.

We are aware that this closure will result in a loss of time spent learning in the classroom. We have carefully considered options for providing education remotely during the closure, but have determined that it is not feasible at this point. One of the primary responsibilities of public schools is to provide equal opportunity for all students, and not everyone has home internet access and the necessary devices for online learning. We are currently exploring other options for at-home enrichment activities.

We understand that school closures have significant impacts on our students and families and we hope to resume normal operations as soon as possible. We thank you for your understanding during this challenging time.

  • Latest Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Posted by Dr. Karling Aguilera-Fort, Superintendent on 3/11/2020 8:00:00 AM

      Dear OSD Parents and Staff:

After careful consideration, and after consulting with the Ventura County Office of Education (VCOE), the Oxnard School District is cancelling all assemblies, evening meetings, and unnecessary events. We are aware that these are important activities, however, we want to take all precautions necessary to protect the health and well-being of our students, staff, and families.

The Oxnard School District continues to work closely with VCOE and Ventura County Public Health (VCPH) in response to COVID-19. VCPH has issued updated recommendations to help slow the spread of Coronavirus in our state. Our district will be providing posters containing information about health and safety protocols such as washing your hands often, covering your cough and sneezes, avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, etc. to all of our school sites as a reminder of preventative measures to help slow the spread of Coronavirus.

The Oxnard School District is implementing required actions in accordance with VCOE and VCPH recommendations. We are providing continuous updates about the Coronavirus and our schools on our website and on all of our official social media sites. We have also created a COVID-19 InfoLine at (805) 385-1506 to provide the same information to our school community in both English and Spanish.

As always, the safety and wellness of our students and staff are a priority. We will be monitoring new developments and will continue to reevaluate our steps and actions. Thank you for your cooperation and support in helping us to maintain a healthy and safe learning environment.

For general questions about Coronavirus and precautions currently recommended by Ventura County Public Health, residents may call the county’s coronavirus information line at (805) 981-5101 or (805) 981-5201.

    Dear OSD Community,

In light of the recent COVID-19 situation, Oxnard School District custodians have been directed to alter their regular cleaning routines to include a more intensive cleaning of hard surfaces.  The custodians have immediately implemented the following cleaning procedures:

    • Daily routine: Classroom hard surfaces will be wiped down with disinfectant (i.e. desk tops, chairs, doors (knobs), drinking fountains/sinks, and all common touch points)
    • Outside playground equipment and outside eating areas will be sprayed down with sanitizer at the end of each day, except on rainy days.

As always, the safety and wellness of our students and staff are a priority. We will be monitoring new developments and will continue to reevaluate our steps and actions.
