Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to Bernice Curren School’s 2022–2023 school year, which will begin on Wednesday, August 17, 2022.  Our School Office hours are Monday-Friday 7:30 AM-4:00 PM. We are excited to welcome you to this new school year and work together with you throughout the year in ensuring that our students get the best possible educational experience yet.  Our school’s goal and priority are to provide a safe learning environment for all students and staff where our students will be supported academically, emotionally and socially as they develop to their full potential. We consider you one of the most important members of our school community partners that will support us as we work together to achieve our mission and vision.

We are working arduously to ensure that our students and staff have a safe and successful return to school. The Oxnard School District will begin the school year for all students through in person learning. We believe that all students have the right to learn and that all teachers will facilitate student learning in a safe, positive and respectful learning environment. It is our expectation that students will maintain high academic and behavioral standards. We expect all students at Curren to follow school guidelines for success; classroom rules and CHAMPS school wide common procedures; collaborate with staff and one another; and follow all school and district policies, including dress and cellphone use policies while at school.

We understand that many students now have cellular phones. Cellular phones must be turned-off and kept in a backpack or a secure location during the school day. Students are not to use cellular phones during the school day. However, all students in K- 8th grade will receive a school personal iPad for educational purposes in school and at home. Students may not text, email, photograph or video anything that violates school and district policy or the education code. We want to work in partnership with parents and the school community to provide an orderly, safe, positive, and respectful school learning environment. Students or parents who have knowledge of potentially suspicious or dangerous activities are encouraged to share this information with our school staff.  Our teachers, staff and I are working hard to prepare to support your child in meeting these academic and behavior expectations.

This school year, our students will have an Early Release Schedule most Wednesdays of the school, (except for the first Wednesday of the school year) to allow for teachers to have collaboration time with one another to better support your child’s academic and social emotional needs.  Due to this, our student school schedules will be as follows:

Regular Schedule

(Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri)

Minimum Day

Grades 1 - 5

Grades 6 - 8

7:30 -7:50

You can check our school website or pick up a calendar in the office listing all other information. Please help us to maximize student instructional learning time by scheduling all appointments outside of the school day as much as possible. It is important that students come to school every day and on time to get the quality education that will allow them to be successful. Students in K-5th need to be in-line on the playground by first bell to avoid being marked tardy. We appreciate your support in advance concerning students’ attendance. Please remind your child that they are to go directly home after dismissal each day unless they have made prior arrangements with their parents.

There is no campus supervision prior to 7:30 am nor after 2:45 pm, unless your student is in the After School Program. You can find the application on our district’s webpage at www.oxnardsd.org. Please arrange drop off and pick up times to support your child’s school program.

You will be receiving more information about a specific schedule very soon. You can also pick up a copy anytime during school hours at the Curren School office.

Family engagement and communication is more important now than ever before.  It is essential to stay connected with your child’s teacher and the school.  Updates will be sent out through Blackboard Connect phone and text messages, so please make certain to notify the Curren office staff with any changes of address and phone numbers. It is very important that you return completed forms like the emergency cards, income verification form and signed parent compact as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Curren office or me. You are an essential part of your child’s education. Thank you for your support as we work together to provide a strong educational experience for all our students! Looking forward to a wonderful 2022-2023 School Year.
